How to Unclog a Drain

Most household clogs are hair, soap scum, or grease sitting in the trap or the first few feet of pipe — usually clearable with a plunger or a drain snake, no chemicals required.

Steps

  1. 1

Remove standing water and visible debris

Bail out excess standing water and pull any visible hair or debris from the drain opening by hand or with a zip-it tool.

  2. 2

    Try a plunger first

Cover any overflow opening with a wet rag, add a couple inches of water, and plunge firmly for 15–20 seconds.

  3. 3

Use a drain snake if plunging doesn't clear it

Feed the snake into the drain until you feel resistance, then rotate and pull to catch and remove the clog.

  4. 4

    Check the P-trap

If the drain is still slow, place a bucket under the P-trap, unscrew the slip nuts, and clear any blockage inside before reassembling.

  5. 5

    Flush with hot water

Run hot water for a minute or two to clear any remaining residue and confirm the drain flows freely.

Safety notes

  • Avoid chemical drain cleaners before plunging or snaking — they can splash back and are harder to work around safely if you end up needing to open the trap.
  • Never mix different drain chemicals; the combination can be hazardous.

When to call a pro

If multiple drains in the house are slow at the same time, that points to a main line clog, not a fixture-level one — that's a job for a plumber with a motorized drain auger.

Frequently asked questions

Are chemical drain cleaners safe to use?+

They can damage older pipes with repeated use and are a safety hazard if you need to open the trap afterward. Mechanical methods (plunger, snake) are generally the better first step.

Why does my drain clog again a few weeks later?+

If a snake only partially clears the clog, or grease keeps building up, the same spot will clog again. A full mechanical clearing or a professional camera inspection can find the real cause.
