Methodology
Base area is length × width. We add your chosen waste percentage (10% is standard; more for diagonal or patterned layouts) to get a recommended purchase quantity, then apply a per-square-foot material cost range.
How this calculator works
The calculator multiplies room length by width to get base floor area, then adds your waste allowance percentage — extra material to cover cuts, mistakes, and pattern matching — to arrive at a recommended purchase quantity. That quantity is priced using a per-square-foot material rate range for your chosen flooring type.

- Floor dimensions in feet. Length × width gives the base area before any waste allowance.
- Waste allowance
- Extra material percentage to cover cuts and pattern matching. 10% is standard for straight installs; diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, or rooms with many corners typically need 15–20%.
- Material
- Laminate, vinyl/LVP, engineered hardwood, or tile — each has a different per-square-foot material cost range reflected in the estimate.
Example calculation
A 14×12 room (168 sq ft) with a 10% waste allowance needs about 185 sq ft of material. In vinyl/LVP at $4–$9 per sq ft, that's roughly $740–$1,665 in flooring material.
What affects your total cost
This estimate covers material only. No — this calculator estimates material cost only. Installation labor is usually quoted separately, either per square foot or as part of a full project bid, and varies by material (tile installation costs meaningfully more per square foot than vinyl or laminate).
How much waste allowance should I use?+
10% is standard for a straightforward rectangular room installed in the same direction as the boards or tiles. Increase to 15–20% for diagonal layouts, herringbone or complex patterns, or rooms with many alcoves, closets, or angled walls.
Why does material cost vary so much within one flooring type?+
Within any category — vinyl, laminate, hardwood, or tile — price scales with quality, thickness, wear-layer durability, and brand. The ranges here reflect the typical low-to-high spread available at most flooring retailers.
